Cover 2 Man — How to Beat It

Cover 2 Man — How to Beat It diagram

How to identify it

  • Two high safeties splitting the field.
  • Corners pressed down at 2–3 yards with inside leverage — cover 2 man wants to funnel outside releases; that inside shade under a two-high shell is the giveaway (zone cover 2 corners sit ~5 yards off).
  • Motion confirms it: a defender travels across with the motion man.
  • Everyone but the two safeties is manned up or rushing.

How to beat it

Setup (pre-snap):

  1. Call double slants — two slants stacked on one side.
  2. Add a backside RB release if you can.

The read, in order:

  1. Don't throw on a one-two rhythm — let the routes develop.
  2. Watch the intersection points where a cover man gets rubbed off his receiver, and throw that slant.
  3. First read is usually the slot slant after he crosses the underneath traffic (inside-leverage corners slow outside releases).
  4. Checkdowns: flats, TE, RB.

Medium game: mesh and crossers

Mesh is the go-to — drags rubbing in the middle.

The progression, in order:

  1. Throw whichever drag's defender gets bumped.
  2. Next, the deep in.
  3. Last, the deep comeback — safe vs trailing man, but the cut comes late.

Shallow cross / slot cross concepts work the same way; any hard-cut route (zig, deep in, comeback) is a man-beater when your receiver out-athletes his man. Deep posts are the trap: both half safeties cap them — don't force it. Play action is amplified — everything is one-on-one, one false step wins.

Check your matchups

  1. At the line, hold LT and push right on the right stick — the pop-up shows WR-vs-CB matchups.
  2. Throw at green.
  3. Prioritize acceleration and change-of-direction (not just speed) — those are the ratings that matter for these short man-beaters.
  4. Scout the opposing corners and target the stiff ones, including the slot defender.

Third-and-long: HB slip screen

Why it works: everyone in man bails deep with his receiver, so the screen gets 3–4 blockers on ~1 defender.

  1. Call the HB slip screen.
  2. Run it to the field (wide) side with an average back.
  3. Run it to the boundary side only with a burner.

The secret weapon: your quarterback

Nobody is man-assigned to the QB. Read option / RPO looks put the whole play on the unblocked edge man and effectively erase a box defender.

Count hats first:

  1. Count box defenders vs your blockers (tackle-to-tackle, 5 yds deep).
  2. Even count = run it — read option turns 6-on-6 into 6-on-5.

The read, at the snap:

  1. Edge crashes → keep and attack the perimeter.
  2. Edge stays wide → hand off.

On dropbacks:

  1. If everyone vacates one side (flood the routes away), scramble into the empty grass — easy third-and-long conversions.

Alternative setup (GetLiveMar)

  1. Put two corner routes on the same side — they pull both DBs wide.
  2. Send a streak up the vacated seam — it's open for the score.
  3. Need a free completion? The RB Texas route on a linebacker wins whenever you need it.
