Reading Coverages Pre- and Post-Snap
Updated Jul 29, 20266 min readcoverage-idpre-snap-readssafetiescorner-depthmotion-tellcoverage-checks
The three-step pre-snap read
Step 1 — count the safeties
- Look at how many safeties are deep.
- One high safety = cover 3 or cover 1 (or cover 0 if nobody is deep).
- Two high = cover 2, cover 2 man, cover 4, or cover 6.
Step 2 — check corner depth and leverage
| Look |
Corner depth |
Shell |
| 1 high |
pressed |
Cover 1 (or cover 0 if the box is crowded) |
| 1 high |
7–8 yds off |
Cover 3 |
| 2 high |
~5 yds off |
Cover 2 / Tampa 2 |
| 2 high |
pressed, inside leverage |
Cover 2 man |
| 2 high |
~8 yds off |
Cover 4 |
| 2 high |
one corner up, one corner back |
Cover 6 (quarter-quarter-half) or cover 9 (flipped) |
Step 3 — run the motion test
- Do all your hot routes before the motion.
- Send a receiver across the formation.
- If a defender chases him across, it's man; if the defense just bumps/slides, it's zone.
- Quick-snap so pressed defenders can't re-press.
