Every term the articles use, defined the way the articles actually use it. Terms with a home article link to it.

A

Aggressive zones — zone coverage strategy pushed toward aggressive/ultra-aggressive; underneath defenders jump short routes (and get burned by streaks behind them). Set globally or per play. Must-Have Settings

Apex — the slot-area overhang defender (nickel/OLB) aligned between #2 and the box; the key player in most match checks (he MEGs the point man in Point Combo, matches #2 in quarters). Reading Coverages

Auto-flip — setting that mirrors your defensive call to the offense's strength so your slot corner/force player is always on the right side. Coaching Adjustments

Auto-motion — motion that has the receiver moving at full speed when you snap; the engine behind pick plays and motion wheels, because the chasing man defender can't recover. Beating Man Coverage

B

Back-shoulder throw — a free-form throw placed behind and away from a trailing DB so the receiver flips around to catch it; the core cover 0 killer. Cover 0

Ball hawk — coaching adjustment; on aggressive, defenders attack the catch point ("pick it, don't swat it"). Must-Have Settings

Bingo — quarters check vs bunch: Box rules on exchanges, but the corner locks #1 if he stays #1. Currently bugged — the corner can blow the exchange. Reading Coverages

Boundary / field — the short side of the field (near hash) vs the wide side. Cover 6 plays its cover 2 half to the boundary; cover 9 flips it. Cover 6

Bullet pass — hold the receiver icon: a fast, flat throw that hits receivers in stride. Pair with pass leading. Beginner Fundamentals

Bunch — three receivers compressed into a tight triangle; creates natural rubs and forces the defense into special checks (Box, Bingo, Skate, Lock). Best Offensive Playbooks

C

Cloud flat — a flat zone played by a cornerback (cover 3 cloud); in Mabel builds it gets stemmed to 20–25 yards to sit under deep sideline balls. Defensive Macros

Combo — man check vs stack: outside defender takes the first out-breaker/second in-breaker, inside defender the reverse. Rub insurance, but loses to double-break concepts. Reading Coverages

Contain — RB+LB puts your outermost rushers in contain hooks with outside leverage against scrambling QBs; contains must be athletes. Also produces glitchy pressure when sent with three. Complete Defense Guide

Cross-manning — manually assigning any defender to man-cover any receiver (defender select → receiver's icon). The one adjustment macros cannot store. Quick Adjustments

Curl flat — the underneath zone (purple) between the hook and the flat; Mabel profiles run it at 5 yards while the flat zones go deep. Defensive Macros

Cut stick — the low right-stick hit-stick tackle; currently glitchy with wear-and-tear, draining multiple speed points from a ball carrier for most of a half. Meta Overview

D

Defender select — press Y/Triangle once and every defender gets a button icon; press it to edit that player's assignment without leaving your user. Quick Adjustments

Defensive crossover — L2+R2 (LT+RT) at the snap: movement mode that tracks routes behind you and changes direction better than strafe; the default in coverage. Usering & Switch Stick

Double mug / mug — mugging is walking linebackers (or your user) up into the A gaps at the line; a double mug occupies both A gaps. 3-3 Double Mug is the most overpowered formation in the game. Warning: mugging a gap with your user now triggers pancake animations. Six Meta Defenses, Stopping the Run

F

Flood — three routes at different depths to the same side, out-numbering that side's zones; universal combos exist in any 3WR+TE set. Complete Offense Guide

Force player — the edge defender (often a cloud flat) whose job is to blow up the lead block and funnel outside runs back inside. Stopping Power Run Schemes

Formation shift — audibling to a formation whose strong side flips; currently broken — the slot corner doesn't follow, leaving one side underdefended. Complete Offense Guide

Free-form passing — holding LT and steering the left stick to place a throw anywhere (back shoulder, up-and-over on slot fades). Requires Placement or Placement & Accuracy passing. Cover 0

G

Gap integrity — coaching adjustment: conservative holds defenders in their gap on inside runs; aggressive sheds and pursues (and can vacate a lane). Sources disagree on which to run. Coaching Adjustments

Green dog — the man defender assigned to the RB blitzes the moment the back stays in to block; the free extra rusher on every pass dog. Best Blitzes

Guess pass (pass commit) — RB + right-stick-up: defenders ignore play action, shed faster, and tee off on the QB — but react late and slow if it's a run. Obvious passing downs only. Complete Defense Guide

H

Hard flat — a flat zone that stays aggressive near the line of scrimmage; used for force players and RPO-screen erasers. Quick Adjustments

High-low — two routes vertically stressing one zone defender (e.g. RB flat + streak on the cover 2 flat defender) so whichever he takes, the other is open. Cover 2

Hole shot — the sideline window between a squatting cover 2 corner and the deep-half safety. Cover 2

Hook / curl (hook-curl) zone — the purple middle-underneath zones; the soft spots in cover 3 sit between them and the curl-flats. "The purples eat the corner routes." Cover 3

Hot route — a pre-snap route change (Y/Triangle → receiver icon). Do all hot routes before motioning, then quick snap. Some routes (returns, posts) run worse hot-routed than stock. Complete Offense Guide

Hover — parking your user over a gap pre-snap to change the offense's blocking icons, then bailing or shooting the gap. Hover off the ball — a user on the line gets picked up and pancaked. Complete Defense Guide

L

Lock — man check with zero exchanges: vs stack, 2-over-2 straight man; vs bunch, 3-over-3 at layered depths. Predictable but pick-vulnerable — never lock bunch at the goal line. Reading Coverages

M

Mabel / Mable — a zone-drop manipulation: flat zones (hard/cloud) stemmed deep to 20–25 yards with curl flats at 5, so the "flat" defender bags corner routes and walls deep crossers while a short zone still rallies underneath. Run single-side or doubled. Defensive Macros

Man beater — any route or concept designed to defeat man coverage: picks, crossers, Texas routes, slot fades, wheels. Beating Man Coverage

Match coverage — zone that converts to man as routes declare: deep defenders latch onto verticals man-style, hooks relate to #3. "All the pros of man with none of the downsides" — beat it like man once routes declare. Reading Coverages

MEG — "Man Everywhere he Goes": a corner locked man-to-man on his receiver on every route, no help (Skinny MEG's backside corner, Stubbie's #1 corner). Reading Coverages

Mid blitz — interior pressure through both A gaps (the double-mug zero send); everyone knows it's coming, it's a chess match of protection vs shade. Best Blitzes

MOD — "Man On Deep": a corner carries #1 man-to-man only while he stems vertical, dropping off if the route breaks short. Standard corner rule in quarters and Skinny's backside. Reading Coverages

Motion tell — send a receiver across the formation: a defender chasing him = man; the defense bumping/sliding = zone. The universal pre-snap tiebreaker. Reading Coverages

O

Off man — man coverage played with a cushion instead of a jam; blitz variant "playing the sticks" sits at the marker on money downs. Best Blitzes

Open / closed set — open: TE detached, five out, backs scat-releasing — blitz it (pass dogs). Closed: TE attached + offset back — a protection look; send run dogs instead. Best Blitzes

P

Palms — 2-read trap check: the corner traps #2 fast to the flat (plays like cover 2), otherwise everyone plays quarters. Best vs condensed sets. Cover 4 Palms keeps safeties in the run fit. Reading Coverages

Pancake — a block that puts a defender flat on the ground; O-linemen now climb to the second level and pancake hovering users, and offensive lines pancake safeties playing linebacker. Stopping the Run

Pass dog / run dog — a blitz sent against a pass look vs one sent against a run look; the same mugged front can be either if your off-ball backers keep vision. Best Blitzes

Pick / rub — offensive traffic that scrapes a man defender off his receiver: stacked releases, auto-motion crossers, mesh drags. Legal and the core of the man-beating meta. Beating Man Coverage

Pitch key — option-defense setting for the defender assigned to the pitch man; aggressive jumps the pitch for TFLs against load/speed option. Stopping Power Run Schemes

Plaster — coaching adjustment governing when zone defenders stop covering grass and start chasing receivers (match-style), triggered by the QB leaving the pocket and/or a timer. Aggressive is the consensus; the trigger setting is disputed. Coaching Adjustments

Point Combo — bunch man check: the apex MEGs the point man while the other two defenders play combo rules. No top help — verticals stress it. Reading Coverages

Press — corners jammed at the line (LT + left-stick-down); kills timing but loses to slot fades, free releases, and late motion + quick snap. Beating Man Coverage

Q

Quick adjustments — the remapped pre-snap control layer: group adjustments, defender select, cross-manning, zone stemming. Quick Adjustments

Quick snap — snapping immediately after your last adjustment/motion so the defense can't re-press or re-align; the delivery system for macro'd plays like Dagger Spacing. Alabama Scheme

R

Rat — a defender lurking the shallow middle hole to rob crossers and drags (Cover 1 Hole's LB, the red-zone "double rat" safeties). Cover 1

Read key — the R-icon defender an option/RPO play reads; he gets sucked into the mesh animation, so move a lineman into that spot if the key is someone you need in coverage. Stopping RPOs

Return route — the whip/return route that snaps back toward the sideline; elite stock, terrible hot-routed — hunt plays that carry it stock. Complete Offense Guide

RPO — run-pass option: a run play with attached now-throws (bubble, flat, seam) read off one defender. Decide fast or your linemen draw ineligible-man penalties. Overpowered RPO Plays

Run fit — the assigned gap responsibilities on a run play (check with RT + X/B). Coverage decides whether safeties fit: Tampa 2/Cover 2 safeties don't; quarters/Palms safeties do. Complete Defense Guide

S

Seam — (1) the vertical route up the hash that splits zones; (2) the cover 3 check vs stack where the seam-flat matches #2. Cover 3, Reading Coverages

Shade / shading — leaning coverage over top, underneath, inside, or outside (L2 + right stick). Blitz default: press + shade inside to force the hard throws. Best Blitzes

Shell — the pre-snap safety/corner alignment picture (CV0/CV2/CV3/CV4 on the right stick at play call). Pick one shell and call every coverage from it so nothing is readable. Complete Defense Guide

Show blitz — walking linebackers/corners up to mug the line without necessarily rushing; scrambles the O-line's pass-off assignments. Six Meta Defenses

Skate — cover 3 check vs 3x1/bunch: aggressive rotation with the apex under #1 and hooks pushing to #2/#3. Really a spot-drop — the bunch corner route stays open against it. Reading Coverages

Skinny / Skinny MEG — cover 3 checks vs 3x1: Skate rotation front-side plus match-carry-deliver by the apex; the backside corner plays MOD (Skinny) or locks MEG (Skinny MEG — he's on an island, and aligns too deep by default). Cover 3

Slot fade — the slot receiver's fade to the sideline; "magic" vs man with no help — smart-route it, stem it down, and pair it with a pick. Beating Man Coverage

Smart zones — D-pad conservative/aggressive landmarks that set where match defenders sit when nobody enters their rail. Cover 4 Quarters

Smoke screen — an instant now-throw to an outside receiver; doubles as the fastest coverage tell — a corner sprinting downhill at it has no deep zone (cover 0/pure man). Reading Coverages

Solo / Solo Cut — quarters checks vs 3x1: the backside safety poaches #3 vertical or robs the solo receiver (Solo); Solo Cut swaps him onto a shallow from the single receiver while the corner poaches. Reading Coverages

Stem / stemming — nudging a route's break point up or down (Y/Triangle → route → stem input): a stemmed-down post slips behind quarters safeties; a stemmed-up C route becomes a deep pick. Defenses can stem zone depths too (zone stemming, L1 + D-pad). Beating Man Coverage, Quick Adjustments

Strafe — hold L2/LT: fast lateral movement facing the QB; great downhill, weak against routes getting behind you. Usering & Switch Stick

Stress — quarters check: true quarter-quarter-quarter-quarter prevent with three under; clock-kill and vert-spam situations only. Reading Coverages

Stubbie — quarters check vs trips: the corner MEGs #1 while apex/hook/safety trap off #2/#3 releases; the corner must win press vertically. Reading Coverages

Stump — quarters check vs trips: the off corner reads #1 — on a hitch/shallow he makes a "smash" call and sinks under #2's corner route. Red-zone/sideline specialist. Reading Coverages

Stunt — a schemed D-line crossing: Texas 4-man loops the ends inside (blows up inside runs), El Paso 4-man loops outside (kills stretch/toss), exit stunts cancel a backside gap. Needs a true 4-man front. Stopping the Run

Sugar — showing chaotic pre-snap pressure — walking bodies around the line so the O-line can't ID who's actually coming. Best Blitzes

Switch stick — flicking the right stick (or, new this year, the D-pad) to switch onto another defender; chaining switches is the biggest skill gap on defense. Usering & Switch Stick

T

Tampa 2 — cover 2 where the Mike linebacker carries the deep middle at the snap, closing the post window but pulling him out of the underneath. Its safeties have no run fit. Cover 2

Texas route — the RB angle route out of the backfield that whips inside on a linebacker; "old faithful" — still a free completion vs man. Beating Man Coverage

Timing catch — timing-based catching: tap the catch button in the green window for a boosted (often contested-winning) catch. Current exploit: tapping the instant the ball arrives autogreens — expect a patch. Must-Have Settings

Trips / 3x1 — three receivers to one side, a single receiver backside; the formation family the Skate/Skinny/Solo/Stubbie/Stump checks exist to answer. Reading Coverages

U

Undercut — beating a sideline route by getting underneath it, between ball and receiver, instead of trailing. Usering & Switch Stick

Usering — controlling one defender yourself post-snap: own your zone first, then run to the route breaking open; sit behind a linebacker vs the run. Usering & Switch Stick

W

Wear-and-tear — the cumulative damage system; cut sticks landed in traffic drain a ball carrier's speed for most of a half. Meta Overview

Wheel route — an RB or motion man bending up the sideline; off motion vs man it's open "~98% of the time" — a pillar of the current passing meta. Cover 1

Wildcat — direct-snap package with the QB out wide; Jumbo Trio QB Blast is this year's until-they-nerf-it wildcat play. Unstoppable Run Plays

Z

Zone drops — configurable depths for flat/curl/hook zones (coverage strategy). Custom drops turn match logic off — keep them in macros, not your base. The 25/5 profile is the Mabel engine. Coaching Adjustments

Zone stemming — manually pushing a single zone deeper or shallower pre-snap (defender select → hold L1 + D-pad up/down); a hard flat can be stemmed from the line to the end zone. Quick Adjustments
