Cover 4 (Quarters) — How to Read It and How to Beat It

How to identify it
Two high safeties, like cover 2 — but the outside corners align ~8 yards off instead of squatting at 5. Everyone deep is bailing to a quarter at the snap.
Underneath is thin (only ~3 defenders), so quarters looks passive against the short game and the run.
For the quarters checks vs stack/trips/bunch (Box, Bingo, Solo, Solo Cut, Tight, Palms, Stubbie, Stump, and the zone variants) see How to Read Coverages Pre- and Post-Snap.
How to beat it
The stemmed post bomb
Setup (pre-snap):
Block the RB — the shot takes time to develop.
Block the TE too if needed.
Streak the X receiver to occupy his quarter corner.
Take a post route and custom-stem it down once — the shallower bend slips behind the sinking safety instead of running into him.
With time in the pocket, you come open behind the safety "every single time."
No post on the play? Build it:
Hot route a receiver to a post (Y/triangle + right stick up).
Stem it up twice.
Streak the X for the same effect.
Vs a switch-stick user
When to use it: the opponent users the deep middle to erase the post.
Option 1 — corner-route decoy:
Add a corner route from the TE.
Stem it down once — it drags eyes and coverage wide.
When the user commits to the corner, throw the post — it still hits behind them.
Option 2 — pull the underneath down:
Put the RB on a Texas route.
Put a TE/slot on a drag to force the underneath defenders (and the user) to come down.
Throw the post over the top.
General notes
Free access underneath: quarters concedes flats, drags, and the run — take the easy yards until the safeties start cheating down, then go back over the top.
Cover 4 "drop field"-style calls show the same 8-yard cushion; the read doesn't change.
