Beginner Fundamentals — Passing, Running, First Plays, Base Defense

Passing mechanics
Bullet pass (hold the receiver icon): your default throw — quick,
flat, hits receivers in stride for yards after catch.
Deep balls: use free-form high passes, not lobs. Lobs consistently
sail overthrown this year. Hold LT/L2 and steer the placement (a high
ball out in front) instead of tapping the icon. And don't throw "up where
only your guy can get it" into coverage — defender catch points were
buffed in the Aug 6-7 patch, and DBs now go up and finish contested picks.
RAC catch: hold X (Xbox) / Square (PS) to catch in stride and keep running.
Possession catch: hold A / X to secure the ball and get down — use on
sidelines (feet in bounds) and over the middle to avoid big hits.
Pass leading: hold the left stick in the receiver's running direction
while throwing. Bullet + lead = max yards on every completion.
Run game discipline
Do not hold sprint (RT/R2) behind the line of scrimmage.
Steer with the left stick.
Let blocks develop.
Only hit sprint at the second level with a lane.
Every run can't be a home run — take what's there.
Your first money play: Y Sail (Gun Normal Y Off Close)
Setup:
Press Y/Triangle, then pick the Y receiver.
Hot route the Y onto a drag.
Beats man and zone, and reads short-to-deep.
Read it short-to-deep:
RB flat — open? Throw it instantly, take the yards.
Y drag over the middle.
TE on the back end — comes open late vs aggressive user coverage.
X receiver crossing late — the last resort.
Stay in the pocket, don't drift, don't force deep shots — that's how
interceptions happen. Mix in an inside zone run to keep the box honest.
Base defense: nickel + a three-coverage rotation
Setup:
Stay in a nickel formation (every playbook has them).
Rotate three calls from the Concept tab (RB/R1 → Concept).
Cover 2 Man
Safest call; man across with two deep safeties.
User the defender on the RB.
If the RB releases, chase him.
If he stays to block, become a free roamer over the middle.
Tampa 2
Forces check-downs.
User the hook zone on the RB's side.
Hold your area.
Drift back late.
Jump crossers that enter your zone (Y/Triangle for the pick).
Cover 3 Sky / Cloud with aggressive zones
Never Cover 3 Match — different animal.
Hold LT/L2.
Press D-pad down — underneath zones clamp the short game.
Rotate to this once Tampa 2 has them comfortable dinking — the short
throws they trusted become interceptions.
